Budget Accommodation Reviews - Asia

My three major considerations in choosing these accommodations were the price, location and their online bookability. The latter is the most important, you dont want to go to a place where english is not widely understood and dont have a pre-booked rooms waiting for you.

As in everything in life, you get what you pay for. Moldy bathrooms, concrete wall outside your window, tiny soaps (if at all) those are standard fare. Just bring your toiletress and sleep sack and you'll be fine.

Malaysia: YMCA – 100MYR: triple bed, shared bathroom, local TV, aircon, tissue, towel, soap, water heater, breakfast and full lenght mirror.

Hot shower did not worked and at night there was a band practicing below and it was really headache inducing. Gladly we were too tired and slept despite it. There’s laundry service downstair as well as the canteen. Internet cafes are walking distance. This is really a good option if you have an early flight as the KL central station is a short walking distance away.

Cambodia: JASMIN LODGE – 15USD: triple bed, private bathroom with hot shower, fan only, breakfast included, towels, tissue, cable TV.

Get their number when you book though because their tuktuk drivers aren’t the very prompt and you might need to call them from the airport. They have internet (separate fee) and their set breakfast was yummy. Have I mention their breakfast is really yummy? Four words: french loaf and fresh fruits,

Thailand: SAWASDEE SMILE INN 650THB: triple bed, aircon, private bathroom with hot shower, refrigarator, mirror, soap, towels, cable TV and breakfast.

It’s set in a quite neighborhood, and there’s a shortcut to Khaosan Rd. The staff weren’t very friendly but that’s fine with me. They room wasn’t that clean and there’s a musty smeel. The aircon was noisy and spluttered once in a while. The room has a lot of windows but they face the hallway so basically they were useless. Breakfast was okay. They have internet (not free) but the one in Baan Sabai, a few steps away, is much faster.

Macau: SANVA HOSPEDERIA – 120MOP: double bed, shared bathroom, slippers, washbasin and mirror.

Possibly the chepest sleeping option Macau that you can booked online. It’s located in the charming Rua Felicidade, a walking distance from Largo de Senado which is a definite plus. The website warned that the hotel is over 70 years of age and it hasn’t been revamped since. Suffice it to say they were telling the absolute truth! And no matter how polished their website is, no one there speaks english! And just in case it’s the middle of the night and you’re lost, the name is pronounced “sun-wah”

Hong Kong: STAR GUESTHOUSE – 300HKD: double bed, shared bathroom, aircon, tv, phone, towels, tissue, toothbrush, toothpaste, slippers, soap, shampoo.

The room was clean and they changed our towels everyday. The whole floor, 6 rooms if I remembered correctly, shared one only bathroom and luckily our room was directly opposite so we usually have first dibs on it. Internet cafe and restaurants are easy to find. Plus there’s a microwave in the reception for the frozen 7/11 fares. Walking distance to the esplanade for the nightly light show, the MTR and the ferry terminal.

Singapore: COZY CORNER GUESTHOUSE 78SGD: 4-bed-dormitory, aircon, shared bathroom, free breakfast and free internet, towel, tissue, tiny soap, mirror.

Line can queue on the 3 computer terminals so be prepared to wait. Breakfast was a bit of a shock: coffee/tea, and toast with margarine and jam. You will have to make it yourself and you will have to wash the dishes after you! Luckily there were decent restaurants below and the location was good, walking distance to the MTR (Bugis station) and the Esplanade. They did not advertise this on their website but aside from rooms they also offers hallway! Yes there were occupied beds in the hallway.
